Why volunteer as an SMC Relationship Counsellor?
Volunteering as an SMC Relationship Counsellor is a great opportunity for you to support relationships and marriages, enhance your own interpersonal skills and be part of an organisation that is committed to healthy communication and family life.
Who supports the volunteer counsellors?
Excellent training, on going CPD and supervision and support from Area Managers is offered to all SMC volunteers.
What training will I receive as a volunteer?
All selected candidates enrol on SMC's 2 year Diploma in Relationship Counselling Course. All SMC counsellors are offered ongoing supervision and CPD.
Dates for Diploma 2014 - 2016 to be confirmed.
Where does SMC's Relationship Counselling take place?
In our local SMC centres across Scotland.
When does counselling take place?
Normally weekday evenings or on a Saturday morning.
How many counselling sessions do clients attend?
The average is 6 sessions, for some clients it's less for others it can be more.
How long do the sessions last?
The session last an hour and normally take place at the same time and in the same location each week.
What happens in the sessions?
Normally as a Relationship Counsellor, you would meet with couples or individuals for around six sessions. Counsellors provide their clients a safe and confidential space for them to discuss openly the issues in their relationship(s).
During those sessions, to help your clients make changes for the future they want, you will be offer a balance of support and challenge.
How many hours a week do volunteers work?
We ask volunteer counsellors to commit 3 hours a week, for a minimum of 5 years.

What happens next?
All prospective candidates will be contacted for an informal interview. You may then be invited to a selection process including individual interviews and group work.
