Scottish Marriage Care promote relationship counselling as the Family Law (Scotland) Act receives Royal Assent

The Family Law (Scotland) Act received Royal Assent on 20th January and its promotion of family support services was warmly welcomed by Scottish Marriage Care (SMC). The need for greater knowledge of and access to relationship services had been extensively promoted by the charity. Chief Executive, Mary Toner, stated today that SMC is looking forward to a bright future providing these valuable services to families in need.

New research released by the charity shows that 80% of clients who sought counselling over the past year were married. Toner is now urging non-married couples, living together or apart, to seek counselling when experiencing relationship difficulties.

Relationship counselling, Toner stated, can work for couples at all ages and stages in their relationship. Studies have shown that counselling helps unhappy relationships by reducing stress and changing negative behaviours, and works equally well for men and women of all social backgrounds. Relationship counselling also reduces work absenteeism, improves productivity and enables people to take on new skills and knowledge through the counselling process. Relationships can be helped at an early stage or when they have drastically deteriorated. Damaged relationships do not need to end in separation, divorce or acrimony. With the right help from relationship counselling services, couples can thrive individually, as can children and wider family e.g grandparents.

People who go to relationship counselling feel better about themselves and tend to develop more sharing and affectionate relationships. Importantly, counselling helps unhappy relationships quickly, with SMC clients attending on average just 4 sessions.
