Scottish Marriage Care Welcomes Family Law Bill

Family support charity Scottish Marriage Care today welcomed the new Family Law Bill. Chief Executive, Mary Toner, said: "Scottish Marriage Care welcomes the Family Law Bill and the additional support it gives to families."

The Bill includes plans to increase access to family support services via a public information campaign and relationship helpline. Toner continued: "It's great to have more support for family relationships that are in difficulty. Scottish Marriage Care welcomes the opportunity for easier access via a website and relationship helpline."

Scottish Marriage Care offers support by counselling couples with relationship difficulties. Toner says: "Counselling can help couples explore the issues in their relationship and enable them to come to a reflective decision about how to work through these, or whether in fact the relationship has ended." Scottish Marriage Care also provides support for couples and individuals whose marriage or relationship has broken down.

Toner continued: "As well as increased support for families, a real investment needs to be made in early intervention. "Scottish Marriage Care currently works with couples before they enter a marriage or committed relationship. "We offer the FOCCUS relationship inventory which helps the couple learn more about themselves and make their relationship a success."

Scottish Marriage Care also does relationship education work with young people in schools and youth groups. Toner says: "Our early intervention work with young people gives them a positive start and equips them with the skills necessary to build positive healthy relationships in their lives."

The Family Law Bill gives parental rights to unmarried fathers and provides legal safeguards for co-habiting couples. It also reduces the separation period for divorces. The Bill also includes a number of non-legislative initiatives to help families who need support to deal with the challenges they face.
