SMC expands

Couples and individuals at all ages and stages in their relationship will have greater access to specialist relationship support as family support charity Scottish Marriage Care (SMC) expands its presence in Inverness.

The services delivered in Inverness by SMC staff include relationship counselling for couples and individuals, 'FOCCUS' and 'REFOCCUS'.

"There is a real need for expert relationship advice and counselling throughout Scotland. By expanding our Inverness based services SMC is working towards meeting that need," said SMC Chief Executive Mary Toner.

SMC is a voluntary organisation with more than forty years experience in the specialist field of relationships. Its services are available to the whole community without judgement or discrimination on any grounds.

"Whatever the problem is and whatever the outcome of the counselling, we offer a safe and confidential place for people to come and talk about their problems," said Mary Toner.

"Research has shown that couples wait an average of eight years before asking for help with their relationship difficulties. It can take a great deal of courage to come to counselling but relationship counselling does work; approximately 80 percent of our clients stay together after seeking our help."

SMC is unique amongst the family support and counselling organisations in that it specialises in early intervention/prevention and advocates a holistic approach to counselling. SMC's services include 'FOCCUS'; a relationship inventory that highlights areas for development while raising awareness of the key components of a successful relationship, and 'REFOCCUS'; a relationship MOT that provides couples with an opportunity to revisit areas in their relationship that haven't been discussed for a while.

The Scottish Executive recently demonstrated the value it places on the services of SMC when it agreed to provide core funding for the charity for the next three years. This support will enable SMC to continue expanding its much-needed services throughout Scotland.
