Scottish Marriage Care acknowledged by
MSPs
Family support charity Scottish Marriage Care
was acknowledged in the Scottish Parliament
yesterday for it's work with young people and
young parents. The recognition came during a
debate on young people and families, a motion
raised by the Scottish Green Party.
Mary Mulligan, the Labour MSP, who is reporting
to the Justice 1 Committee on the family support
services inquiry into the provision and funding of
family support services cited the important work
Scottish Marriage Care's REACT project has done
with young people and young parents saying it
"demonstrated the support that is available".
"Relationship counselling services and
mediation is crucial and there is a worry about
their future provision..... I hope to see those
services supported into the future," she
said.
She went on to say that children prospered when
they had a stable family life but that many
families in need didn't always seek help, as there
is a stigma associated with looking for support.
SMC Chief Executive Mary Toner agreed with MSP
Mary Mulligan's comments saying; "It takes a
great deal of courage to seek help but it is worth
it. People from all walks of life seek our
assistance and approximately 80 percent of our
clients stay together after participating in our
specialist counselling services."
"We are thrilled that our hard work is
being acknowledged by such influential people and
in such an important arena," Mary Toner
said.
