Marriage just as important as the wedding
This weekend's Scottish Wedding Show at the
SECC is the perfect event for couples planning a
wedding. And family support charity Scottish
Marriage Care is the perfect organisation for
couples planning a marriage or lifelong
commitment.
Unfortunately a successful wedding and a
successful marriage can be mutually exclusive and
although many couples spend a vast amount of time
planning their big day they prepare little for
their life long commitment.
"So much time and effort is put into the
wedding itself but very few people give the same
thought and consideration to making the marriage a
success," said SMC Chief Executive Mary
Toner.
"It's a well known fact that early
intervention holds the key to successful relationships.
Pre-marriage intervention can improve a couple's
communication skills, conflict management and thus
overall relationship quality."
SMC offers pre-marriage relationship
counselling in the form of FOCCUS (Facilitating
Open Couple Communication Understanding and
Study). FOCCUS relationship inventory helps
couples learn more about themselves and their
unique relationship, raising awareness of the key
components of a successful relationship. FOCCUS is
not a pass or fail test and cannot predict marital
success or failure but it highlights the areas
where the relationship could be developed. FOCCUS
is a supportive, helpful, positive process for
couples before they enter into a committed
relationship.
