Scottish Marriage Care calls on couples to FOCCUS this Valentine's Day

As Valentine's Day approaches, family support charity, Scottish Marriage Care have called on couples planning to marry to take part in the 'FOCCUS' pre-marriage inventory programme. Mary Toner, Chief Executive of Scottish Marriage Care has warned that couples need to plan for their future lives together as well as the wedding ceremony itself.

'FOCCUS' is a helpful, positive process for couples to complete before entering into a committed relationship. As well as highlighting positive areas in the relationship, 'FOCCUS' also flags up areas for development. Couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship. Research has shown that pre-marriage interventions improve a couple's communication skills. Conflict management and overall relationship quality also get better.

Couples who understand relationships, how they work and how and when they can go wrong, are in a better position to deal with relationship difficulties when they arise, either by themselves or by seeking help at an early stage. Many couples experiencing difficulties do not seek help from relationship counselling and those who do often leave it too late.

Figures released by the charity show that many have already taken part in the 'FOCCUS' process with 1501 people completing the inventory over the past year. This is a 10% increase on the previous year and figures are expected to rise even further in 2006.

All of the main churches now offer the 'FOCCUS' inventory to couples planning to marry via Scottish Marriage Care. Also Registrars throughout the country stock 'FOCCUS' information leaflets and couples can pick these up when the register for civil marriages. Toner urges couples to take advantage of this information and the 'FOCCUS' process stating that "The £50 a couple spend on 'FOCCUS' may be the best £50 they have ever spent."
