Scottish Marriage Care - research, information and statistics on families and relationships

Scottish Marriage Care has a dedicated Research and Communication facility. We carry out primary and secondary research on families and relationships.

Scottish Marriage Care produces regular Factsheets and Briefings which can be viewed online.

Our current research projects include a study of the REACT Young Parents Project, in collaboration with CRFR.

SMC Statistics
SMC helps individuals, couples, children and families improve their quality of live though our expert relationship services. Some interesting facts about relationships and SMC are:
  • It has been estimated divorce costs the British economy between £15 and £20 billion every year.
  • There were 10,940 divorces and 30,881marriages in Scotland in 2005.
  • Approximately 80% of our clients stay together after seeking our help.
  • 86% of SMC clients rated our service 8 out of 10 or better.
  • Almost 100% of SMC clients said they would recommend our services to friends and family.
  • People with severe mental health problems are three times more likely to be separated or divorced as those who haven't experienced mental health problems.
